How it works
How to calculate how much SPC flooring you need
SPC flooring is sold in boxes, and every box holds a fixed number of planks of one size. The calculation is therefore four steps:
- Floor area = room length × room width.
- Area to buy = floor area × (1 + wastage). Use 5% for a straight lay, 12-15% for a 45° herringbone or chevron pattern.
- Planks = area to buy ÷ area of one plank (plank length × plank width, in metres).
- Boxes = planks ÷ planks per box, rounded up to the next full box.
The calculator above does all four steps and also shows how many square metres your order actually supplies, so you can see the offcut you pay for. It works in metric or imperial, so you can type room sizes in feet if that is how the plans arrive.
How many square metres does one box of SPC flooring cover?
| Plank size | Plank area | Planks per m² | Box of 10 | Box of 12 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1220 × 183 mm | 0.223 m² | 4.48 | 2.23 m² | 2.68 m² |
| 1520 × 228 mm | 0.347 m² | 2.89 | 3.47 m² | 4.16 m² |
| 915 × 150 mm | 0.137 m² | 7.29 | 1.37 m² | 1.65 m² |
| 1800 × 220 mm | 0.396 m² | 2.53 | 3.96 m² | 4.75 m² |
Areas are the plank face area. A 15-20% difference against the room size is normal because of the perimeter cut and the last row.
How much wastage should I add?
| Installation pattern | Recommended wastage | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Straight lay, plank parallel to the wall | 5% | Only the last row is cut. |
| 45° herringbone or chevron | 12-15% | Every plank is cut at both ends. |
| Random staggered | 8-10% | End cuts from every row. |
| Room with many corners or columns | 10-12% | More short offcuts. |
Before you order SPC flooring - 8 checks
- Same production batch. Ask the factory to pack all boxes for one room from the same batch and colour code, otherwise the tone difference between two boxes is visible along a joint.
- Acclimatise for 48 hours at 18-26°C in the room where it will be installed.
- Dry subfloor. Concrete moisture below 3% and wood subfloor below 2% before laying.
- Expansion gap of 8-10 mm around the entire perimeter - SPC moves with temperature.
- Underlayment: 1.5-2 mm IXPE foam or self-adhesive film for sound comfort and click-lock stability.
- Thicker core for commercial traffic: 5-6 mm with a rigid core for shops and offices, 4 mm for residential rooms.
- Keep the leftover planks. The remainder of the last box is your repair stock for future traffic marks or a damaged plank.
- Check the wear layer: 0.3 mm for light residential use, 0.5 mm for busy homes, 0.55-0.7 mm for commercial.
Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of SPC flooring do I need for a room?
Multiply room length by width to get the floor area, add the wastage for your laying pattern (5% straight lay, 12-15% herringbone), divide by the area of one plank and then round up to whole boxes. The calculator above returns the box count, the plank count, the square metres the order supplies and the material cost at your price per box.
How much wastage should I add when ordering SPC flooring?
Add 5% for a straight lay where only the last row is cut, 8-10% for a random staggered lay, and 12-15% for a 45-degree herringbone or chevron pattern where every plank is cut at both ends. Rooms with columns and many corners need closer to 10-12%.
What does one box of SPC flooring cover?
It depends on plank size and planks per box: a 1220 x 183 mm plank in a box of 10 covers 2.23 square metres, the same plank in a box of 12 covers 2.68 square metres, and a 1520 x 228 mm plank in a box of 12 covers 4.16 square metres. The table on this page lists the common combinations.
Can I mix two different plank sizes in one room?
You can, but keep them in clearly separated zones and never in the same visual field, because the plank width and the repeating grain pattern change the look of the floor. If you plan a herringbone layout, tell the factory the two plank sizes so the pattern can be cut correctly.
Do I need underlayment for SPC flooring?
For click-lock SPC on concrete, use a 1.5-2 mm IXPE foam pad or self-adhesive film: it absorbs impact sound, levels small height differences and keeps the locking system stable. A moisture barrier film is required if the concrete subfloor is damp or in a ground-floor project.
